The PEBRC is committed to helping public institutions build more just, sustainable public employee benefits that balance the needs of the current generation without sacrificing job opportunities and the economic viability of future generations. Our nation has for too long approached the future as one of limitless resources. This has caused many public officials to make promises that cannot be sustained. We must now look at reality and adjust these promises. If we are unwilling to make changes today our children's futures will be similar to those of the US auto workers children, unemployed or under employed no doubt wishing they could work in an auto plant or at any job that provides a living wage.
Our mission is to inform legislators and other elected officials about retirement benefit issues. Our objective is to propose solutions that will provide competitive, sustainable retirement options for public employees that are fair to employers and taxpayers. We believe reforming the pension and retiree health care obligations promised to public employees is the most critical public finance issue of the decade.
The Public Employee Benefits Reform Council will use a variety of forums and techniques to educate the public and decision makers--including seminars, media events, and personal meetings. PEBRC has established an advisory board to help organize like-minded organizations and individuals for common action and to develop proposed solutions that have broad public support.
